Do It Yourself Wedding Favors

For creative and inexpensive gifts for your guests, consider do it yourself wedding favors.

When planning your wedding, a great way to cut costs while at the same time providing a personal and unique gesture is to create do it yourself wedding favors. These little gifts for your guests show them how much you appreciate them and give them a memento to keep long after the wedding is over.

Remember that in planning your wedding you will have a million and one things to do, plus a lot of expenses, so this part should be kept as simple as possible. There are many do it yourself wedding favor ideas that don't require many materials. Some of the most common materials used to make wedding favors include curling ribbon, tulle, hot glue, artificial flowers, potpourri, candy (pastel almonds, foil-wrapped chocolates), and small tins or boxes.

Traditionally wedding guests have been given small bags of rice to throw at the bride and groom, but in the years since it was discovered that this was unhealthy for birds. Now the tradition has shifted to giving bags of birdseed instead. Birdseed parcels can be made with a square of fine-mesh tulle bundled around a small amount (about two tablespoons) of wild bird feed and tied with curling ribbon or satin ribbon. You may also want to include a small charm or similar trinket and a tag saying either the guest's name or those of the bride and groom.

Another popular do it yourself wedding favor idea is a small bottle of bubbles (many companies offer "wedding bubbles" which can be ordered inexpensively in bulk) decorated with curling ribbon and a personalized tag. A fun, springtime touch can be added by hot-gluing an artificial flower, such as a daisy or a rose, to the lid of the bottle.

A do it yourself (DIY) discussion wouldn't be complete without including everything edible. Candy of all types can be tied up in loose-mesh tulle with ribbon and a charm to create a pretty package. Candy-coated almonds have been given since Roman times (traditionally in a package of five) to symbolize the bittersweet commitments of marriage. Other elegant choices include pastel mints, foil-wrapped chocolates, heart-shaped candies, and orange or peppermint sticks.

Sachets are another very traditional do it yourself wedding favor, and are very easy to make. One way to make very attractive sachets is to sew two squares of tulle around three edges with narrow satin ribbon, fill with potpourri and then sew the top shut, leaving long, flowing ribbon bows at the corners. You may want to decorate your sachets with a sprig of rosemary. This recognizes the Victorian tradition of giving rosemary to wedding guests symbolizing that, although the bride and groom are starting a new life together, their friends and family will not be forgotten. A nice way of explaining this tradition is to briefly print out the story and attach it on a curl of paper to one of the ribbons on your sachet.

Bring out the best in your do it yourself wedding favors by using pretty packaging. For example, an inventively decorated box or tin can be a charming keepsake in itself. Small paper boxes or tins with clear plastic lids can be ordered in bulk or found at reasonable prices at craft supply stores, and there are many easy ways to decorate them. There is the option of using hot glue to attach ribbons and artificial flowers. But you can also personalize gift boxes by attaching a small photo framed in ribbon. Or you can print the recipient's name in craft paint. These boxes, along with tea tins or tins with clear lids, can be filled with elegant candies, silk flower petals, or small charms to make a lovely and lasting gift.

Once you gather some friends and basic materials and get crafty, the possibilities are endless for making a lasting impression and a very personal statement with do it yourself wedding favors. No matter what you decide to make, it will definitely be a unique and personal expression of who you are and a way to give of yourself to show appreciation for your guests.

You Can Have An Elegant Wedding On A Small Budget
 by: Amy Spade

If you have a smaller budget, you’re probably afraid that all of your guests will realize it. But honestly, a twenty thousand dollar wedding isn’t necessary. Many couples have done it for a lot less, and no one could tell.

What’s important

Like coming up with the original budget, you need to determine what the most important things of the day are. Do you want the designer dress? Must you have the reception at a fancy hotel?

Some things that you may want to spend money on: photography and rings. These are two things that you will keep long after the wedding day, so these are the things that should be number one on the planning list. Don’t skimp.

A cheaper ceremony

If you’re able to have your ceremony outside, then that can be the least expensive way to go. Not only are you able to take advantage of nature, but many of the times, it will be free for you to use. Places that may work are parks and botanical gardens, friend’s backyards, and beaches. Of course, these are rather weather dependent, so you’ll have to have a backup plan as well.

Find someone that you know who is a minister to do the vows, and ask that their marriage gift be the fee. This is a perfect way to include your friend and save them the trouble of giving a gift.

Skimping on the reception

The best way to keep your costs low for the wedding is to have the ceremony and reception in the same area. Even if you do have to pay a fee, then it’s only once. Another way to cut down on reception costs is to have a light afternoon cocktail hour in lieu of dinner. You can serve appetizers and drinks instead of a pricey meal.

You don’t necessarily need a band to keep the fun going either. A lot of couples have found that a friend with a multiple CD player and a good variety of CDs is just as good as a deejay. And most friends are willing to help out at the wedding if they can anyways.

Be creative when you go out and look for all of the things you need for your wedding. You’d be surprised at how many things you can save on. One couple made their own programs, decorations, and had it at a friend’s house for about three thousand dollars. The guests exclaimed that they’d been to more expensive weddings that weren’t half as beautiful.

Going Back In Time: Plan A Renaissance Period Wedding
 by: Amy Spade

With the romantic feelings in the air, it’s no wonder that a classic theme of weddings is the renaissance or medieval times. There is a sense of chivalry and grace in that period that is easily captured for a wedding theme.

Creating the scene

The first thing that helps a renaissance themed wedding is the actual setting. If there is an older church or an outdoor setting that you can agree upon, it’s best to start there. The renaissance was a time where people were closer to nature, so incorporating something outdoors might be nice.

You could decorate the area with a lot of simple bunches of flowers. Think of the times as simpler and you’re sure to find even more ideas. Ribbons make for wonderful decorations as well. They can be tied to pews or to chairs as a subtle touch of beauty.

Your wedding party attire will also make an impression. The bride may want to wear something long and flowing with bell sleeves and an intricate bodice. Anything that looks like a corset is beautiful, though they’re much more comfortable now.

The groom is a little trickier as many men don’t want to wear leggings or tights, but a luxurious coat with a thick brocade pattern might be the perfect way to show his dedication to the theme. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can have different colored versions of the outfits.

You might also want to ask your guests to come in similar attire. Just make a notation on the invitation and have the entire setting be transported back into time.

All in the details

The ceremony can have a more nature-oriented theme as well. This can include the lighting of candles, as well as the jumping of the broom and sword. This is an African tradition that blends in quite well. This is the signal that the new couple will be working together from that moment on.

To truly capture the renaissance theme, it’s the details that matter. Give your guests small sachets of lavender or some other fragrant herb. Attach some folklore to it as well. Or you can have traditional Celtic or medieval musicians play for the reception.

A feast of roasted pig or lamb would also be appropriate--though you don’t have to eat it straight off the bone, like in days of old. Have plenty of drink and candles and you’re well on your way to a renaissance themed wedding.

Give your guests a hint of the theme by including a renaissance poem in the invitation, or sealing them with wax and your new monogram. Themed weddings are all about the details. Do some research and find some that work for you.

nique Wedding Favors - How to Find Unique Wedding Favors for Your Wedding
 by: Brigitte Smith

Wedding favors have become an integral part of a wedding. And many brides, and couples, search for unique wedding favors which will make a statement and from which the guests will remember this wedding with fond memories.

So when you’re planning your wedding, one of the decisions you’ll undoubtedly need to make is in the selection of wedding favors for your guests - and what better wedding favors than heirloom wedding favors. These small gifts are a wonderful way to show your guests that you appreciate them coming to celebrate your special day and to say a small, personal “thank you” to your guests for their attendance, their friendship, and their wedding gifts to you.

No longer limited to weddings for the wealthy or well-to-do, unique wedding favors can now be ordered from a number of sources, including online companies, for a fraction of what they once cost. Even a modest or small wedding can be made much more special by providing thoughtful and even unique wedding favors for the guests.

Wedding favors are typically small but thoughtful items that serve as a memento of your beautiful day. Traditional items include things like ornate bottle-stoppers, cake servers, and serving spoons. Such items are intended to be a keepsake for the wedding guests rather than something they will actually use in everyday life.

Some couples, however, will choose wedding favors that serve double duty as a reminder of the event as well as a useful item. Small picture frames, decorated place card holders, lovely candy dishes, pen and pencil sets, and other such favors fall into this category. Edible wedding favors such as mints or candies in an attractive tin are also available. The choices are truly limited only by your imagination.

Typical wedding favors come with traditional wedding theme designs including bells, doves, hearts, flowers, and flowing ribbons, but can also include more modern motifs like dolphins. With the more costly but far more personalized option of custom ordering, virtually anything is possible.

The most important consideration is selecting wedding favors is to remember that these are items meant simply to say “thank you.” You’re not going to find the perfect item that will please each and every guest at your wedding, but a little thoughtfulness will result in favors that will at least let your guests know that you’re thinking of them. The guests at your wedding are primarily your family and your friends, and they will invariably appreciate a small souvenir of the event.

Wedding favors should not be confused with the traditional gifts provided by the bride and groom to members of their wedding party. It is proper to provide the bridesmaids and groomsmen with a more personal and separate gift. Anything that says you appreciate their friendship and participation in your special day is appropriate for these close friends or family members.

Your wedding is undoubtedly one of the most important days in your life and all of the planning that goes into this momentous event reflects that importance, helping to make your special day a beautiful experience for all involved. Selecting the perfect wedding favors - unique wedding favors - can help make that dream of beauty and perfection into a reality!
